I kind of feel like Oprah Winfrey this morning: Suicide Squad gets a new trailer! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gets a new trailer! Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them gets a trailer, and Captain America: Civil War gets a scene/trailer! EVERYONE GETS A TRAILER!!!!
Seriously though, it’s a great time to be a geek right now. Civil War had a press screening and the majority call it the best MCU film to date. Suicide Squad shows Margot Robbie having a blast as Harley Quinn, TMNT has wisecracking turtles, and Fantastic Beasts has Warner Brothers hoping the Harry Potter franchise continues to print money for them.
Let’s start with the most anticipated film of the summer, Captain America: Civil War. This clip shows Cap’s new Avengers working together in perfect harmony to take out an armored enemy. My guess is that they are looking to take down Crossbones and that this is from the beginning of the film. The Russo Brothers really know how to choreograph action sequences, and this film looks no different.
Next up is Suicide Squad. Take a bunch of villains from the DC universe, offer them a chance to get out of jail in return for working for the government, but even in the small chance they survive the suicide mission, never plan to let them go. Margot Robbie looks like she is giving an exciting and fun take on fan favorite Harley Quinn, Will Smith spreads his charm, and we finally get a comic book movie from DC. Ever since Christopher Nolan stripped Batman down to the basics, DC has been afraid to step away from the grounded realism that he established. Even in Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman it felt heavy and ponderous. This may be the surprise of the summer, and as a friend said to me last night, “The DC Universe can only go up from Batman v. Superman.”
Let’s continue with Warner Brothers, and talk about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer. We are invited back to the wizarding world of Harry Potter, but this time we are in New York in 1926, following wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he enters the Big Apple with a mysterious suitcase of magical creatures. We don’t get to see much of any of the fantastic beasts that the title indicates, or where they were found, but this looks exactly like what Harry Potter fans want and expect from a spin off. This trailer actually gives us a little more information about Newt Scamander, including the fact that he was expelled from Hogwarts for his work with dangerous beasts. But not unlike Harry Potter, professor Albus Dumbledore fully vouches for him, likely because he sees brilliance in him.
Last, but not least the Heroes in a Half Shell are back in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows are back and unlike the previous version where we didn’t see much of the turtles due to lack of CGI budget, the Turtles are front and center, and so are their most famous enemies and allies. This movie has Shredder and Baxter Stockman and Bebop and Rocksteady and Krang, and even a bit of Casey Jones for good measure. And yes, April and Vernon Fenwick are back too.
It’s shaping up to be a great summer at the movies! What do you think of these new trailers? Sound off below!
